The Design Story Behind the Grand G680 Hull

Behind every cruise, every smooth turn, and every moment of confidence at the helm of the Grand G680 lies a commitment to precision engineering and design evolution. While many boats look impressive on the surface, it’s what happens below the waterline that truly defines the ride. And in the case of the G680, the hull is really what advances the experience onboard this boat.

An Evolution Born from a Challenge

The G680 was conceived in 2023 in partnership with industry-leading Swedish yacht designer Mannerfelt Design Team. The challenge: take the legendary performance of the international bestselling G650 model and make it even better. This meant enhancing seakeeping, reducing spray, increasing efficiency, and refining handling… all while maintaining the sleek, balanced form that defines Grand’s design DNA.

This wasn’t a simple re-model. It was a complete rethink of how a rigid inflatable boat of this size could move through the water.

Simulation-Driven Design

To meet the challenge, our engineering team turned to ANSYS Fluent, an advanced fluid dynamics simulation platform typically used in aerospace and Formula 1. Simulating the movement of a hull through a complex multiphase environment – balancing the behaviour of both water and air – requires immense computational power.

Over 100 separate simulations were conducted to test how minute changes to geometry, weight distribution, and hydrodynamic elements would affect the boat’s real-world performance. Every design decision was data-backed and tested.

Refinements That Make All the Difference

Based on what the simulations revealed, the Grand G680 hull underwent a series of strategic improvements:

  1. Optimised Chines
We refined the chine lines to reduce spray and improve water flow, delivering a drier ride and better grip in turns.
  2. Redesigned Bow Cross-Section
The bow now slices more effectively through chop and swell, enhancing wave-piercing performance and ride softness.
  3. Keel Line Adjustments
A new keel shape reduces drag and improves planing efficiency, helping the G680 achieve higher speeds with less effort.
  4. Refined Bow Tube Geometry
Streamlining the bow tube reduced resistance and helped further decrease spray reaching the deck.
  5. Weight & Balance Tweaks
By carefully adjusting the centre of gravity and switching to a longer engine shaft, we unlocked better handling dynamics and responsiveness at all speeds.

The result? A boat that’s longer, heavier, and more spacious than its predecessor, and more efficient on the water.

A Hull You Can Feel & Trust

Our customers often describe the G680 with phrases like “surprisingly agile”“incredibly smooth”, or “handles wake beautifully” And this all comes down to the hull and work it does below the waterline, making every ride feel seamless — whether you’re powering across open water or gently gliding into shore.
