A design difference
Grand Centre Console Boats
While a centre console boat traditionally positions the helm centrally along the boat’s length, Grand takes that layout further. All of our models sized 5.5 metres and above have a centrally located helm along the width too, rather than offsetting the helm to one side. Not only does this open up deck space and create room to move down both sides of the boat, but it also creates unobstructed sight lines and creates a more balanced ride while underway.
FAQ
Centre Console Boats: Frequently Asked Questions
What is a centre console boat?
A centre console boat is a boat where the helm are positioned centrally along the length of the vessel, rather than at the stern or bow. This layout frees up the stern, creates an open deck, and allows passengers to move around the boat more freely. Centre console layouts are used across a wide range of boat types, from small tenders through to large offshore RIBs.
Are all Grand Boats centre console?
Yes. Every Grand rigid inflatable boat features a centre console layout. From 5.8 metres upwards, Grand’s centre console design goes further: the helm is centred across the width of the boat too, rather than being offset, meaning you’ve got maximum deck space on both sides of the helm.
What makes Grand's centre console design different from other brands?
Most centre console boats centre the helm along the boat’s length only, and offset the console to one side of the beam, which means passengers can only move down one side of the boat. At Grand Boats, all of our models 5.8 metres and above position the console centrally across the length and width of the boat, meaning that you’ve got room to walk down both sides of the boat. It also means when you’re underway at speed, the boat is much more balanced, rather than leaning to one side.
Combined with our outward-positioned tubes, our deck layout is noticeable more open and spacious, with room to move around for all passengers.
What is the benefit of having the helm centred on a boat?
When the console sits in the true centre of the beam, the deck opens equally on both sides. Passengers can move freely around the boat without squeezing past a console blocking one side. The driver has clear sightlines port, starboard and forward. And the boat feels more balanced, something that is particularly noticeable when you’re underway at speed; boats with offset consoles will have a lean while underway.
How many people can a Grand centre console boat hold?
Passenger capacity varies by model. The G580 is rated to carry up to 11 passengers, the D600 up to 12, the G680 and G750 up to 12, and the G850 and G980 up to 14 or 16. All models are certified to Australian standards and fitted with Australian Builders Plates, which details the exact capacity of each model.
Do you have centre console boats for sale in Australia?
Yes. Grand’s centre console RIB boats are available for sale across Australia through our official distribution – Grand Boats Australia – and our national dealer network. Centre Console Rigid Inflatable Boats, Built Differently
Grand Boats has been designing and building rigid inflatable boats in Ukraine for over 25 years, and the centre console layout has been central to the brand’s design philosophy from the beginning.
Most boats described as centre console are centre console in one sense only: the helm sits forward of the stern, roughly in the middle of the boat’s length. The console itself, however, is often offset to the starboard side of the beam, which reduces usable deck space and creates an uneven experience for passengers.
Grand’s approach from 5.8 metres upwards is different by design. The console is centred in both dimensions; along the length of the boat and across the width. With the helm sitting in the true centre of the beam, the deck opens equally on both sides. Passengers can move freely around the vessel without squeezing past a console that’s blocking one side. The driver has clean, unobstructed sightlines port, starboard and forward. And while underway, the boat is balanced – unlike boats with offset helms which have a noticeable lean while travelling underway at speed.
This true centre console design is combined with a further design difference; tubes that are positioned further out from the gunwale, which opens up the deck space even more. People who view our centre console RIB boats – including the Grand G580, Grand G680, Grand G750, Grand G850 and Grand G980 – comment on how much bigger they feel inside, and this is down to the combination of the centrally positioned helm, and outwardly positioned tubes.
Every Grand centre console boat in the range is available for viewing and water trial at our Gold Coast rigid inflatable boat showroom or through our dealers across Australia. Whether you’re comparing models or ready to enquire, our team is here to help you find the right fit for how you use the water.
