RIB Boats - Frequently Asked Questions

‘RIB’ or ‘RHIB’ stands for ‘Rigid hull inflatable boat’. These rigid inflatables – and Grand RIBs in particular – are characterised by their inflatable tubes (typically made of pvc or hypalon material), as well as their medium-V or deep-V bottom hull, which make for an incredibly improved seaworthiness. Learn more about what defines a rigid inflatable boat in our handy guide.

There are numerous design benefits that make RIBs good boats. With multi-chamber inflatable tubes that almost double the boat’s width, rib boats have remarkable buoyancy volume and enhanced stability, making it incredibly safe and comfortable for passengers on the water. The deep-v bottom hull of these rigid inflatables also improve their stability in the water. The main body materials of Grand RIB boats are also lightweight and flexible, making the boat’s portability, storage ability and transportation easier than ever.

RIB boats offer unparalleled safety thanks to their design and in many ways are safer than other conventional hard-hull boats. With inflatable tubes that enhance the boat’s stability, buoyancy, and seaworthiness, passengers can feel more comfortable at sea. However, as with all boating, it is vital that passengers take care to have appropriate safety measures on board – including life vests and kill cords – to ensure that your boating experience is as safe as it can be.

Choosing what size Grand RIB boat will be best for your family will come down to how many people you plan to have as passengers, and the type of activities you wish to do. All of Grand’s boats (from 3 metres and above) have the capacity to hold at least four passengers, and so would work well for a family of four. However, for the greatest comfort and experience, a family of four and more may wish to consider a boat that is 5 metres in length (such as the G500) and above.

From the G500 up to the D950, you’ll find a capacity of 9 -16 passengers, and with their spacious layouts, sundecks, centre consoles, large storage capacity, showers & tap systems, fridge and cooking tops, are great for days out with all the family. The G750 and G850 in particular have proven a particularly popular boat for families over time, and would work well for a family of 5, 6, or even 8 due to their large seating areas, intergrated fridge and freshwater systems. With customisable layouts and features, all of our boats work well for all kinds of family activities, whether you prefer fishing or waterskiing & wakeboarding.

There are a number of factors that make Grand inflatable boats a good boat choice for fishing. The total weight of the hull, tubes and materials is generally much lighter than hard-hull boats, enabling it to reach high speeds and be much better in its engine consumption than a heavier hard-hulled boat – RIB boats make very efficient and safe crafts for fishing on the hunt. The stability of a RIB boat (thanks to its tubes and deep-v hull) ensure it’s very stable at standstill and high speeds.

On the interior, Grand RIBs have a truly optimised layout design, meaning that there is a lot of space to move around our boats with fishing equipment. We have also designed our boats to ensure great storage capacity to store as much of this equipment as possible. While some additional precaution may need to be taken with hooks around the inflatable tubes, the tubes of Grand RIBs are designed to be resistant and the advanced technology ensures that RIB boats are unsinkable even when inflatable tubes are flat.

Grand RIB boats are a great choice for beginners and those wanting to start boating. They are quick and easy to drive and handle and manoeuvre easily thanks to their lightweight design. Moving around tight spaces is easier with a rigid inflatable boat as they are so responsive. The inflatable tubes make the boat very stable and act as shock absorbers – they make pulling up to a dock or another vessel much easier for learning beginners, as you don’t have to worry about potential damage like you would with a hard-hull boat.

A Grand RIB has been a first boat for many customers worldwide, as they truly are a great craft to learn boating. Smaller in size, our S470, S420 and S370 boats have proven popular choices for kids to learn boating on as well.

The maximum speed of a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) depends on the individual configuration, engine size and boat chosen. At Grand boats, our RIB boats can be powered from 15HP up to 700 HP depending on the chosen style. The maximum speeds for individual Grand boats are:

S330 – up to 20 knots
S370 – up to 25 knots
G340 – up to 25 knots
G380 – up to 30 knots
G420 – up to 35 knots
S420 – up to 30 knots
S470 – up to 35 knots
G500 – up to 50 knots
G580 – up to 50 knots
G680 – up to 50 knots
G750 – up to 50 knots
G850 – up to 55 knots
